Dr. Anke Zimmermann, ND, FCAH, Naturopathic Pediatrics. Naturopathic and Homeopathic Care for Children in Victoria, BC. Practice Focus on Developmental Disorders, Child and Youth Mental Health, Auto-Immune Disorders and Vaccine and Medication Injuries.
Dr. Anke has a strong interest in immunological disorders, including allergies and asthma as well as auto-immune conditions such as type 1 diabetes, lupus, juvenile-onset rheumatoid arthritis, celiac disease, multiple sclerosis, Crohn's disease and many more. One in seven North-Americans suffer from an auto-immune condition and they are the second-highest cause of chronic illness.
It is very likely that autism and related conditions are also primarily auto-immune conditions.
In these conditions the body attacks itself. The most common cause of auto-immune conditions is infection. An acute or chronic infection can trigger cross-reactions of the immune system from cell markers on infectious organisms to healthy body cells with similar cell markers. Toxins can also increase auto-immune reactions. Some people are genetically more prone to auto-immune disorders. It is important to identify the causes of immunological abnormalities and to address all contributing factors.
Certain nutrients are known as immune modulators. So are parasites. Parasites can secrete substances to down-regulate the immune system, thereby effectively preventing elimination. It is known that in areas of the world where parasitic worms are common the incidence of auto-immune disease is low.
Treatment of Auto-Immune Conditions
Treatment involves identification of the causes of the condition rather than just suppression of the inflammation. Addressing hidden infections, toxic factors can be extremely helpful. Dietary intervention and the use of certain supplements, herbs, homeopathic remedies and saunas can help to reduce inflammation and reset the immune system.
