Education and training of naturopathic doctors
Pre-medical training
Like a conventional doctor, dentist, or chiropractor, the naturopathic doctor first completes pre-medical studies at university, including courses in biology, chemistry, organic chemisty and psychology.
Naturopathic medical school
The naturopathic student then enters into a four-year, full-time medical program at an accredited school of naturopathic medicine. In many ways to the medical training is very similar to the training of medical doctors. Students learn anatomy, physiology, genetics, pathology, embryology, histology, nutritional biochemistry and many other basis medical sciences.
In addition the training encompasses naturopathic history, principles and therapeutics, including clinical nutrition, acupuncture, homeopathy, naturopathic manipulation, massage therapy, hydrotherapy, lifestyle counselling, and others.
Supervised clinical training
In additions students receive extensive clinical experience under the supervision of licensed naturopathic doctors.
Graduates receive the title "N.D." or Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine after passing rigorous licensing exams.
