Cases Studies

Reading about successful cases is one of the best ways to learn about homeopathy for both patients and practitioners alike. Although anecdotal in nature, these case studies are illustrative of the potential of homeopathy as well as of the way in which I work. The case stories also point to our common humanity, our struggles and triumphs with life, the nature and mystery of health and disease and our deep connection to one another and to nature.

Salty Baby

Homeopathy for Infertility

Marianne consulted me in the fall of 1997 regarding her inability to conceive a child. She had been married for three years and, although not using birth control, had never conceived. All the regular test for both partners had come back normal. I proceeded to ask her all the usual questions we like to ask in homeopathy, including details about her life and personality. She was visibly uncomfortable with my inquiry and practically squirming in her chair. It was very difficult to obtain any kind of personal information from her. I was almost as uncomfortable as she was.

Life makes me sick

A case of vomiting from severe anxiety
James, age 28, consulted with me in January of 2010 regarding a severe case of anxiety leading to vomiting attacks.
"When I get nervous I get nauseous and often start to vomit for an hour or more. Then I don't feel well enough to eat for up to two days. "  After vomiting that severely he sometimes has traces of blood in the vomitus. If he drinks water he vomits it back up after a few minutes. He also gets very motionsick. This had been going on for at least five years.

Bad reactions to slight stress

Even slight stress can set off an attack of vomiting; for example, he had recently been getting ready to buy a pet hamster and built him a really nice cage, but was so worried about doing a good job and making sure the hamster would be happy that it set off an attack. To make matters worse, at this point he was thinking of proposing to his girlfriend and couldn't  quite stomach the idea of how and when to pop the question. He was also worried about planning the wedding and going on a honeymoon. But even the thought of being late for a ferry could set him off.  "It's the anticipation that gets to me," he said.

Baby Joy after Endometriosis

Natural Treatment of Infertility caused by Endometriosis

Natalie consulted me about 14 years ago regarding her excruciatingly painful periods. She had been diagnosed with endometriosis many years ago and was also infertile. Married ten years, she had never been able to conceive. Her husband and her had adopted a little boy five years into the marriage because they really wanted a family.

At this point her goal was just to manage her severely painful periods. There was no thought of achieving a pregnancy. One of the main things I gave her was an herbal complex called 'Herbotox' by a company called 'Genestra'.

Salt strikes again

A case of unexplained movement disorder

A 68-year-old female consulted with me regarding a chorea, also known as movement disorder, which she has had for the past 15 or more years. She has seen many neurologists over the years and has also been seen at a University movement disorder clinic without any success or explanation. She tested negative for Parkinson's disease, Alzheimers and Huntingtons.

Her arms and hands move involuntarily and almost constantly. She may fling her arms out to the side, sometimes hitting people, she fidgets a lot, taps her fingers a lot, repeatedly slaps her hand down on the sofa or bed, may play with her wedding ring and place her hand under her husband's pillow on the bed rubbing the material, which drives him crazy.

I hate my Dad

A case of psoriasis from suppressed anger

A 32-year-old woman consulted with me in December of 2007 regarding her almost life-long psoriasis - she was diagnosed with the conditions when she was only four years old. She was practically covered in large spots of psoriasis from head to toe, including her lovely face and lower arms, so it was very visible to the world. She immediately started talking about her childhood.

"I can only remember bad things from my childhood. There is so much sadness. It takes over and I need to cry and let it out."

"I am always thinking about my Mom. I feel that she has a lot of unfulfilled desires and sadness. She has always been sick. I've always wanted to help her get better."

She loves to sing

A case of developmental delay and epilepsy

Sarah is a 14-year-old girl first seen in June 2011. The parents' main concern was the onset of brief, epilptic absence seizures lasting 15-30 seconds over the past two to three years. An EEG was negative. Then recently she was sent to summer camp, cried the whole time while there and upon her return started to experience full blown grand mal seizures, which are becoming more frequent, averaging about eight grand mal seizures every two weeks.

She has been home schooled since September 2010.

Epileptic Seizures

Sarah gets dizzy before a seizure and becomes very loud, can't control her voice, becomes overly social, saying hi to everyone. After a seizure she is sick to her stomach with vomiting and very weak, pale and lifeless for up to two days.

Two Brains and nothing feels right

A Child with serious behavioural problems, nightmares and compulsive tendencies

I first saw David, a handsome 11-year-old boy in May of this year. His mother reported that he was suffering from intense agitation and restlessness at night on going to bed for the past few months. If he had to get up after being comfortable, for example to go to the bathroom, he would complain that "nothing was right", not feeling good in his skin and becoming increasingly frustrated to the point of hitting himself to distract him from this feeling. The only thing that would help was reading or watching some TV.

I asked David to describe this sensation of "nothing being right." He told me that he is bothered by little things.

Eczema and Vomiting in a Child

This is a case of a 4-year-old girl with mild eczema and occasional bouts of vomiting which illustrates that patience pays off in homeopathy.

I first saw Selina in August of 2011. Selina developed eczema on her wrists at age 2.5 with flare ups in the winter and improvements in the summer. During a recent summer holiday in Europe she developed eczema on her legs, a new area, and in the summer.

In April of this year Selina had a bout of vomiting that lasted for a week and required hospitalization for rehydration. During the holiday in Europe in the summer she developed another attack and vomited for two days. The vomiting was stopped with suppositories. Five days after the family returned to Canada it started again, Selina was again brought to a hospital for it.

A Teenager with Depression

Marianne, a 17-year-old high school student was first seen on March 17, 2011 for complaints with chronic depression, fatigue and lung problems. The fatigue and depression had been present for over a month now. She was avoiding her friends, crying a lot and barely going to school.

Not a good situation as she was in her last year of highschool. She had also quit doing her previously favorite interests, including musical theatre and band.

She was seen by a psychologist who called it a normal teenager thing.

The mother, a teacher, was not so convinced. Additionally, Marianne's older sister had gone through a similar spell at this time in her life.

All alone in the Wilderness

A case of panic attacks in a young boy

Michael was nine years old when I first saw him in 1998. He had curly dark hair, large brown eyes and cherubic features. The mother had brought him to me as a last resort because he had been suffering from intense panic attacks and constant anxiety for about ten months now. He had seen a child psychologist for nine months already, with minor improvements.

"Michaels does not want to school because he is afraid that we'll die while he is away. He is also afraid that he will die. Any time he hears an ambulance he thinks they are coming for him because he is very ill or dying."

He was afraid to be alone, especially at night, and clung to his parents.

Little Red Riding Hood

A four-year-old girl with intense fears

I first shaw Grace, a very pretty and lively four-and-a-half-year old girl in September 2011 for intense fears of the dark, water and dogs.

"She absolutely hates getting her face wet," the mother reported. "Even as a baby. And she is terrified of dogs. Already as an infant she would scream and cling to the mother if she saw a dog. She is also scared of cats, if a little less so.

A cured Case of Asthma in a Child

Robert was four years old when I first saw him in November of 2008. The chief complaint were asthma-type attacks of coughing and a tight  chest whenever he got a cold. The family had recently visited relatives in Newfoundland, staying in a damp basement. Robert got very sick and coughed terribly for ten days to the point of gagging. It can get so bad that he loses his breath. He may have reactions to mold and mildew as he is also worse at the daycare which has a musky smell.

Past Life Asthma

A cured case of asthma in an adult

While writing up the case of the boy with asthma I remembered an extraordinary case of recurring asthma attacks, which were literally cured through a past life regression.

Maureen, age 40, had been suffering from increasingly severe asthma attacks which were set off by colds. She would get a cold about every other month and it would immediately affect her bronchi, leaving her coughing violently. It got so bad she had to take time off work as any talking aggravated her condition.

Regression Therapy

None of my remedies seemed to have much of an effect and Maureen was thinking of going on an inhaler. She also had some unusual relationship problems and due to those I referred her to a psychotherapist in Toronto who also uses hypnosis and regression therapy in his work.

Baby won't sleep

I recently saw a cheerful 6-month-old baby with a very tired Mommy.

"Ashleigh is up every one to two hours at night, wanting to nurse," the mother reported. "I feed her, but when I put her down she's up and crying again shortly after. She wants to be held constantly. This goes on all night. "

Already during the pregnancy, our little baby afftected mom's sleep. "I didn't sleep well during the pregnancy, that's very unusual for me."

Pregnancy history

The mother's water broke one month early and it was discovered that Ashleigh was a breech baby. A C-section was performed and Ashleigh was placed in the NICU for one week as she was not feeding well. She was feisty from the get-go and ripped the feeding tube out of her nose.

She immediately wanted to be held constantly.

She got a horrible diaper rash after the family changed to cloth diapers. It was hard to clear up.

Bailey's big, bad Ulcer

Homeopathy for dogs
Bailey, the 11-year-old yellow lab of a friend of mine, had been suffering for some time from an increasingly worsening, large ulcer on the right side of her face. The ulcer looked like a crater and was about an inch inch across. This is also referred to as a 'punched out' appearance when talking about skin conditions. The base of the ulcer was necrotic, which means that the tissue was dying off.

There was a slight yellow moist discharge on it. Bailey had already received antibiotics but was not responding well and was supposedly develping blood poisoning and kidney failure from the infection acording to her vet. She had stopped eating and was barealy moving at this point. The prognosis was grim and the family was getting ready to say their good-byes to their dear friend.

She won't say a Word

A case of selective mustism
Chelsea was almost four years old when I first met her. She had curly brown hair and hung on tight to a stuffed toy throughout our visit. The mother had come for a consultation because Chelsea refused to speak to anyone but her. She attended a Montessory pre-school and would not speak to any of the other children or interact with them at all, even though she had been there for six months. She did not speak to the teachers either, who were quite concerned about the child. Chelsea did not even speak to her father. At this point she had been diagnosed with selective mutism.

A Case of severe Attacks of Rage
Rachel, a lovely, 10-year-old girl with long blonde hair quietly sat in my office with both parents. Her mother had already briefed me on the phone:

"The psychiatrists want to institutionalize Rachel for life - under heavy sedation! She is becoming stronger every day and is considered to be a danger to herself and others. The other day she tied a rope around her neck and threatened to jump off the deck to kill herself. Last week she pulled a knife on her brother. When she has an attack of rage it takes two or three people to restrain her. We actually have to sit on her. At those times she has superhuman strength."

Tuberculosis anyone?

A case of a boy with recurring infections and failure to thrive and a sister with mood changes and bed-wetting

Little Jaime, only two years old, has platinum-blonde hair, angelic blue eyes with enormous lashes and an almost translucent complexion. His also charming, green-eyed, four-year-old sister Alexa had come along for the visit and was fighting with her brother over the office toys the entire time.

"Jaime has had problems from birth. He was born underweight and has never really thrived. He has had many infections from birth, including a deep case of bronchitis just recently as well as ear infections. He is sick every six weeks."

He looked absolutely angelic, if a little pale. He has had chronic diarrhea from birth and has never had a normal bowel movement.

Tics in the Wind

A child with 'Benign Fasciculation Syndrome'

Liam is a four-year-old boy who was first seen in October 2009.

Early in May of 09 when he was two-and-a-half, he started having trembling episodes during the night. By September he started having tics, various involuntary body movements and shudders during the day and often more severe episodes during the night, when he would complain about being uncomfortable and unable to sleep. The mother thinks the symptoms came on after a virus. She has started to give him magnesium which helps somewhat.

He has seen a pediatrician and a neurologist who odered an EEG in August which came back normal. The neurologist told the family it was genetic and there was nothing they could do about it.

Jack the Squirrel saves a Leg

In 1996, the year I saw Mrs. Hamptom, over 6000 patients with diabetes were hospitalized for lower limb amputations. This number was expected to reach over 10,500 patients by 2006 and over 15,000 by 2015.

Prevention of suffering and reduction of cost of health care with naturopathy and homeopathy
If we as naturopaths and homeopaths could only work alongside conventional doctors in hospitals and clinics, so much suffering could be prevented and so much money could be saved. At the present time 40% of the provincial budget in BC is spent on health care and the majority of this money goes towards critical illness, chronic disease, including drugs, long term care, end of life care etc. Most of these areas could be served through preventative and collaborative care with natural methods.

I can't breathe

A case of recurrent pneumonia
This is a case of a 66 years old woman who was diagnosed with double pneumonia around Easter. She had not been feeling well since, suffering with night sweats, hot and cold flashes, weakness and residual coughing.
Her medical doctor suggested that she had after effects from the pneumonia and suggested she see a naturopathic doctor to help her with her immune system.

Hold-em up!

A Case of Panic Attacks in a Young Girl

Isabella was nine years old when I first met her, a lovely young girl with long, blonde hair. She had been suffering from intense anxiety attacks as well as generalized anxiety ever since watching a Freddie Krueger horror movie three months ago. The mother was concerned that her reaction was this long lasting. At this point Isabella was unable to go to the basement alone, although it was finished. She was afraid of the dark and unable to sleep alone at night. She fearred that her family would get murdered. She did not have any of those fears prior to watching the movie. As if a Nightmare on Elmstreet wasn't enought, detailed questioning revealed the following story:

Treat the Cause, or, the Dogs!

Multiple Organ Failure and Fear of the Dark in Two Wheaten Terriers
Why is this a case about dogs? Because they are not unlike chidren, and in addition, they do not know what a placebo effect is. Writing up the  case of IBS in a young girl  reminded me of the time I treated two Soft-coated Wheaten terriers. The dog's owner, let's call her Anna, came to see me in regards to severe fatigue. On inquiring into her circumstances I learnded that she had great difficulty sleeping.

Summer Camp Adventures

A case of IBS and migraines in a young girl
In February of 2009 year I received a phone call from a former patient of mine from Ontario asking for advice for his 12-year-old daughter whom I will call Lisa – not her real name. The young girl was suffering from irritable bowel syndrome as well as severe migraine headaches which would come on during the night, sometimes several times a week. She had been suffering like this for four years but was steadily getting worse over the past two years and especially the past few months. They had taken the girl to a couple of other practitioners in the area with some success.

The Case of the caged Heart

A case of vasospastic angina

48-year old female, first seen November 14, 2008.
She has had angina due to vasospasms for the past two years. The symptom picture was one of classic angina, but there was no blockage of the arteries. The patient was rather annoyed by the angina.
“I have no time for it. I resent having to pay attention to my body. I’ve got things to do. I’m still mad at the doctors who diagnosed it.”

How did her heart feel about this?

“I think my heart wants a break. It wants a rest between beats. I was taking on all the responsibility of the world, doing far too much.” She was feeling out of breath telling her story. “But I feel I’m not big enough for the job. I feel I don’t have the skills. What I really want to do is to be silly and play!”

“The amazing thing is that I do so much. I do the teaching, bookkeeping, the bodywork, I push myself to do more and more. I feel I have to earn my keep to feel secure.”

 Secure?

Warts and all

A case of recurring warts and developmental delay in a child
This had to be the worst case of warts I had ever seen. There were hundreds of them, almost completely obscuring this young girl's ankels. No, I didn't know either that warts could grow on the ankles, but here they did. Warts on top of warts, next to warts and instead of warts. Resistant warts.

Riley's parents had tried everything to kill them, to no avail. They just came back time and time again. As usual, alternative medicine, and in this case homeopathy, had become the last resort.

Alas, even in homeopathy there are no wonder drugs for warts.

Suffocated and shocked

A case of weakness after bronchitis and shock after a fall

I first saw Marian, age 86, on June 1, 2010. She presented with a severe bronchial infection since April 2. She had been treated with three different antibiotics as well as prednisone. At this point she was off the meds but was suffering from continuing asthma symptoms and was very fatigued.

She had a history of breast cancer, diagnosed seven years ago and successfully treated.

She was married three times.

“I was suffocated. I felt held back. Like a ball and chain at the ankles. I have a lot of enthusiasm and enjoy life, but my husbands didn't."

In her second marriage she felt overwhelmed with responsibility. Married a
man with children and had some more. “I couldn’t breathe – there was this
huge weight on my shoulders.”

Jumping into the Fray

A Case of Anxiety and unexplained Vascular and Neurological Symptoms of the lower Legs
Patient is a 55 year old female health care professional. I presented this case at the Annual BC Naturopathic Convention in October 2010. It is a great example of the connection we had to nature on a deep level. It is written in the patient's words.
As a very young child, I spent a lot of time looking out the window, looking beyond, spacing out. My earliest memories are of sitting at a picture window at the edge of the sofa staring out.
I grew up in a large family with a lot of discord. I was the youngest of five children. I remember siblings coming and going, my mother going out. It was like a movie. I wasn’t included, felt left out. They’d go off skiing but I’d be too young to come along.

Nothing is real

Homeopathic Treatment in a Case of Depersonalization and Panic Attacks after taking Street Drugs

(Note: I presented this case at a professional conference and it is therefor intentionally relayed as it unfolded to demonstrate that in sensitive situations the patient may not speak about the main complaint directly at first, but that nonetheless every word is important and points to the correct remedy. It also contains a detailed analysis which may be more useful to professionals, but still interesting to lay people. Also of note, it would have been great if he could have been seen right after the depersonalization incident as the remedy would have likely given him very fast relief. Homeopathy is extremely helpful in serious mental illness, however, we rarely see these cases in our practices in Canada as such patients are normally immediately drugged.)

Dental Implants and Psoriasis

Acute psoriasis after dental post installation

A 43-year old woman consulted with me recently regarding the sudden appearance of a spreading rash on the back and right side of her neck. The condition started 2-3 weeks ago.

The rash looked like psoriasis and since I knew that the patient had no previous history of this condition I asked her if she had recently had an infection, for example tonsillitis. Sudden onset of  psoriasis may be caused by strep infections, this is also known as post-streptococcal or guttate psoriasis.

It turned out that she had a post for a dental implant installed in her left lower jaw three weeks ago. I suspected that she had developed an infection in that area. She also had pain in the left side of her face as well as a headache.

The Magic Oyster

Two cases of fear of the dark

Daniel, age nine is worried about everything, especially falling asleep. "I can't go to sleep, there is darkness creeping out of the drawers. It looks like scary monsters or part of a dinosaur." This was especially bad two years ago where he would even vomit from anxiety before going to sleep.

Elena, age 11 cannot go to sleep alone at night and spends every night in her parents' bedroom. She is very scared at night in the dark, especially if alone. She sees mice, rats, bugs and tendrils of darkness coming out of her drawers at night. Both of these kids know that the problem is their imagination, nonetheless, they are very scared. She also has trouble sleeping through the night and used to have night terrors.
