Over the years I have treated dozens of children with enuresis successfully with homeopathy and occasionally through diet changes.
Bed-Wetting and Food Sensitivities
Many years ago I saw a 9-year-old boy with chronic bedwetting. He came to the office accompanied with both parents. Throughout the visit he sat alone in front of my examination table, did not interact at all and did not play with any toys. He looked exhausted and had large shiners under his eyes. The parents reported that he loved milk and drank several glasses a day.
My first recommendation was to take him off all milk and cow's dairy. When the family returned for a follow-up two weeks later he was a different boy, playing, talking, energetic and he had not wet the bed since the parents had taken him off the milk! Needless to say we were all quite surprised and thrilled with this dramatic change.
Many doctors think that some children just have small bladders or take longer to develop bladder control. This is only partially true in my experience. If a five-year old still wets the bed there is an underlying reason which can usually be addressed with naturopathy and homeopathy.
Homeopathic Treatment of Bed-Wetting
One of the most commonly used homeopathic remedies for bedwetting is Tuberculinum, a remedy made from tubercular discharge. This does not sound appetizing I know, but for some reason children with a family history of TB are much more prone to bedwetting as well as an assortment of other health and behavioural concerns.
In homeopathic circles we consider Tuberculinum to be a bed-wetters best friend. About 50% of cases may be cured just with this remedy. It is also interesting to note that milk allergies are common in children requiring this remedy. Occasionally a child regresses to bed-wetting after ancute illness such as the flu, in which case this remedy can also help dramatically.
Deep Sleepers and Bed-Wetting
It is common for parents of such children to tell me that the child sleeps very deeply and is difficult to arouse at night to take to the washroom. This is a good clue towards this remedy. Children who need this remedy are also often restless at night and grind their teeth.
The other 50% of children may benefit from a number of other remedies, including Medorrhinum, a remedy made from gonorrhea. As gonorrhea affects the genitourinary tract this always made sense to me.
So do not let your child or yourself suffer needlessly, a look at possible food sensitivities and a little homeopathic remedy may be all it takes to have dry nights and much less laundry.
